Triticale is a new species of cereal that has been created by crossing wheat and rye. Not many members of Sociedad Cooperativa Andaluza Campo de Tejada produce triticale, but even so a significant volume is produced in terms of tonnage. It represents six percent of our total cereal production.Triticale is a more resilient cereal than the rest, since it is not so demanding as regards soil quality. This means that acceptable triticale production can be achieved from less rich soils. Proof of this is the fact that significant areas of mountain and

stony ground are used for its production. Its fertiliser requirements are also less than those of the other cereals produced by the Cooperative, such as durum wheat and common wheat.

These crops are mainly destined for the fodder sector. Thus, the main target market of our triticale producers are the different animal feed manufacturers operating throughout all of Spain.

Two grow triticale in our area of influence in the provinces of Huelva and Seville, the sowing rate is between 220 and 230 kilos of seeds per hectare.The crop can be produced in subtropical, moderately temperate and moderately cold climates. With respect to the soil, it has shown that it can adapt well to acid soils and although it is not a demanding crop, it prefers relatively compact soil, that is,

with a relatively low porosity especially at the moment of germination.

As regards irrigation, the most important time, when there must be no shortage of water, is after sowing and during tillering, grain setting and growth. In general, triticale water requirements oscillate between 400 and 900 mm/year.
